First fog falls

Kuindzhi_Winter_Fog_1890_1895

First fog falls

merging sky and water

while waves lap mist-milky

slap the riverbank dripping dull drops.

Beneath the black trees

birds flit

flock of brown leaves falling.

And parting the heavy curtain

with ghostly wings

the silent white gulls drift

on the rolling grey tide.

I used to do lots of things I didn't much enjoy. Now I am officially a writer. It's what I always wanted to be.

  1. There are words in this piece that have never been juxtapositioned before to illustrate an image – the hollow sound of water’s dull slap still echoes at me. Brilliant lexical composition Jane.
