Elusive sleep slips,

Sifts through the spaces

Between the stars,

And sweet oblivion buzzes

With the terrible grinding of the mind’s cogs.

Dawn grates on the horizon,

Mimicking the rasp of morning birds.

The world roils like a shifting storm-sea,

Gnashing its teeth,

Spitting out the pips of pleasure,

For others to gather.

Sleep slips away

Fading with the growing, crashing light,

And I long for silence,

For silent darkness,

For blessed peace.

I used to do lots of things I didn't much enjoy. Now I am officially a writer. It's what I always wanted to be.

    1. First night without the sleeping pill—I was only allowed four of them. They only worked the first three nights anyway. On the fourth I kept waking up. I’ll have to investigate some herbal stuff I can take every night without getting addicted!

      1. I felt like death yesterday and looked like it. Had a birthday to prepare too. Two nights on the trot without sleep is quite bad enough. Hope you find the right rhythm tonight 🙂
