Back to one of my favourite illustrators for this week’s challenge—John Bauer. It carries on the fairy/folk tale theme that opens up so many possibilities for letting out our inner child. Who are the children on the white horse? Who is leading them and why? Are they searching for something or escaping? Tell me a story to fit John Bauer’s magical illustration and post the link in the comments before next Thursday. As I mentioned before, internet access is a bit iffy at the moment so expect glitches.
Reblogged this on O LADO ESCURO DA LUA.
have a lovely weekend, Jane 🙂

Love this! 🙂
His illustrations are beautiful 🙂
Yes, they are.
Pied Piper in Blue
Your critique is welcome, Jane. (And no, I don’t have any more details!)

I wasn’t going to ask for an autopsy 🙂
😉
Terrific choice John Bauer is one of my absolute favorites also.
You know him? I only discovered him by accident and was astonished at how modern-looking his work is.
Yes. I found him when I was writing a thesis on fairy-tale art many years ago and saw all the Russian works first, then leading to Rackham (sp?) and eventually him, plus if memory serves he did some work on a hans christian anderson thing
He did a lot of Nordic fairy tales with trolls and forest animals. A real craftsman.
Superb art. Just so perfect. How wonderful to be able to capture a fairy tale in an image, I can’t even fathom it.

Too long and I’m sure it still isn’t clear who the children were and are. All critiques most welcome. As always.
Fabulous image, Jane. The story could go so many ways. My inner child was dancing.
I’m glad! It’s the kind of artwork that sets the imagination dancing 🙂
Great image Jane, a fabulous challenge I have to say:

I’m glad you like the image, Michael. He was a fabulous illustrator.
Here’s my entry – and I have to ask myself why I attempt to write fairy tales (I literally freeze in my tracks) …. but I still do it, from time to time ….

It’s a wonderfully rich image – I like the craftsmanship of the detailing.
Hope you have a wonderful weekend Jane 🙂
Thank you! Have fun yourself! I’m glad you like the image. I’m a great admirer of John Bauer’s work.
https://myfrillyfreudianslip.wordpress.com/2016/12/09/jds-microfiction-challenge-journey-herensuge-and-his-sisters/ with italicized changes. Hope this is clearer. Don’t mind telling more about Ledda and Herensuge.
Jane, thank you for this amazing photo prompt. I can see why John Bauer is one of your favorites. Here is what I came up with:https://www.haddonmusings.com/2016/12/10/microfiction-challenge-#26-A-journey/
I’m back! We have mollified Thor, and are back on line. And I’ve done a story, as usual pleased to have critique. It’s a bit gloomy. https://fmmewritespoems.wordpress.com/2016/12/11/the-journey-microfiction-for-jane-dougherty
Sounds good. Gloomy is not obvious from the picture.
Maybe gloomy is the wrong word. I’m having vocabulary difficulties today!
I am really enjoying these illustrations. They remind me of some in books that I believe I still own somewhere…from a series of Color Fairy Tales. I have an idea… So I’ll be back, hopefully sometime today.
Looking forward to it 🙂 Some of those old story books that are considered so un-child friendly nowadays have stunning illustrations.
I am hoping the books I referenced are just packed somewhere… but I did find
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1508135.Faeries – and the cover illustration and the first two tag lines on the back cover: “Faeries – legends about them abound throughout the worlds. They are evil creatures conjured up to frighten children….(or) Well reminds me of what you say, though this paperback the cover is the only illustration.
Modern children’s stories seem so sugary in comparison. As if children can’t take fear and a bit of excitement. I followed your link and tried to find Pipkin the Elf. It’s on goodreads but without the cover illustration, but there are google images. It was fun seeing them again.
This week, Jane, I seem to have wandered in the past as well as the future. http://engleson.ca/?page_id=8247
A glitch has stopped me commenting on your blog, But I enjoyed your response to the prompt.
Thank you 🙂 It was going swimmingly until I got to the point where Joris decided to break the curse and I couldn’t think of how the hell he would do it without bloodshed.
Here it is:
A History Lesson in the Alphabet Brother’s Castle
And the next installment is coming when?
The right prompt presents itself…
I’ll have to bear that in mind 🙂

I think mine is just in time! https://janedougherty.wordpress.com/2016/12/09/microfiction-challenge-26-a-journey/
I’m usually late posting the round up, so there’s a margin 🙂
Good to know. It’s only because I’ve been trying to get ahead on my blog this month.
I post a lot, but still manage to forget that on Thursday morning I should post the round up.
It can be easier done with anything else going on though!
True!
I probably shouldn’t read the news. 🙂 So here’s mine. I want to write another more magical one, if I have the chance.
https://merrildsmith.wordpress.com/2016/12/14/the-journey-microfiction/
Am i too late?
Nope. But it’s rare that anyone is too late. I usually forget to post the round up on time 🙂
https://wordpress.com/post/ellenbest24.wordpress.com/3170
Here it is a bit off piste as they say, I hope it is liked.
It is, as usual 🙂
I only just found this, Jane; my machine ate the prompt so I’m probably out of time. I did wonder what the horse was thinking though. Grimly bearing all these sprites as usual. Who’d be a horse in a fairy tale?
Well, you’ve started so I’ll let you finish…Go on, get on with it. I’ll grab any excuse to be late posting the round up 🙂
A combination prelude and epilogue — “prelogue” to my story: Herensuge and His Sisters to help clear things up, maybe?
