A quadrille for the 8 mai

A second quadrille for dverse on this double victory day, and a warning against complacency.

On this day

an echo of another—

shouts of joy that rang around the world

bouncing off the armoured cars

abandoned guns

the mounds of dead

the ruins of majestic towns.

It whispers still—

listen and you’ll hear—

beneath the sound

of marching feet.

I used to do lots of things I didn't much enjoy. Now I am officially a writer. It's what I always wanted to be.

  1. The French maybe hear those echoes more clearly than we do. I heard a very faint echo of Les Mis in here, too…congratulations on not having to live with LePen…😅🇪🇺

    1. I don’t know the musical so any similarities are purely accidental 🙂 The sound of the jackboot comes over loud and clear, but not from the other side of the Rhine this time…
