We’re getting there. Another poem then a couple more boxes before bed. This one is for the dverse prompt, rain and its homonyms. And upbeat. Don’t ask me what it’s about—it’s upbeat, that’s all. If I had time, I’d find a blue horse painting to go with it.
It’s raining stars—
though we see only steel-grey water—
and the great sky horses plough their heavy wings
through torrents of molten fire,
and shake their manes at the dog star.
No bridle, no reins to guide and arrest,
no saddle and spurs to tame the beast,
the wild hunt with no hunters,
the race with no winner, no prize.
They hear only the clash of clouds,
dance among piercing spears of lightning
and the rain,
deluge,
laughing, horse-splashing rivers,
that the last roses catch and dangle,
diamond-tipped,
in the morning sun.
Loving this post! I’m thinking of the constellation of stars…I’m certain there are horses there…and they gallop through the storms, chased by lightening, unbridled and racing. Loving this idea! 🙂
There has to be something positive and magical in this awful weather we’re having!
This is almost like I feel a divine being riding the sky…. Got me thinking of Thor
I prefer Freyr, but you’re right, it’s an idea that goes deep in the human psyche.
Jane, You play metaphor so well, so effortlessly. Love this poem!
I’ve been back and forth all day about car insurance, parking spaces for removal vans and sharing out various bits of kitchen equipment among offspring. I need to let my brain off its leash for a while in the evening 🙂
You are a brave soul; moving is not for the faint of heart!
I’m faint of heart. But I’m also soft in the head…
Oh my goodness this is beautiful, Jane. I was up there in the sky with you and the wild, thundering horses, the rain of stars. And then you set us back on earth with a diamond-tipped rose greeting the sun. Just brilliant!
I’m glad you liked this, Sarah. It’s an antidote to the back-breaking, stressful, utterly mind numbing process of packing up to move.
I feel your pain. I moved this summer. I think your antidote is much more lyrical than mine. I ate junk food.
I can see the attraction. I tried to pack up the kitchen stuff a few days ago and have had to unpack almost everything. Why do we have to eat?
I extra like the last four lines. And I’ll imagine the blue horses. 🙂
I’m sure you know exactly which ones I have in mind 🙂
🙂
The great plough horses shaking their heads at the dog star – what wonderful imagery this is! I truly enjoyed this and read it thrice, straight through.
I’m glad you liked it, Toni 🙂 I need to let my imagination lose for a few minutes of the day at least.
Anything that begins with “It’s raining stars” is gonna go somewhere beautiful. This is lovely.
Thank you, De 🙂 Lillian specifically asked for upbeat, so…
I liked the laughing rain and the horse-splashing rivers.
Thanks Frank. We’ve never had a september like this for cold and wet. We’ve had long, hot Indian summers for as long as we’ve lived in Bordeaux, and for our last september here it hasn’t happened.
Delicious, delightful imagery!
Thank you, Beverly 🙂
Reblogged this on Die Erste Eslarner Zeitung – Aus und über Eslarn, sowie die bayerisch-tschechische Region!.
Cheers Michael 🙂
But you paint a beautiful picture! (K)
It’s good for the soul to imagine fantastical scenes.
I love those ‘great sky horses’, the way they ‘shake their manes at the dog star’, and the ‘laughing, horse-splashing rivers’, ‘diamond-tipped, / in the morning sun’. Just gorgeous, Jane!
Thanks Kim 🙂 Mood is oscillating between feverish excitement and sickening anxiety. Almost packed up…
Keep going, Jane. 🙂
I’ll do my best, Kim.
A beautiful poem.
Thank you!
