Written this evening on the train home after spending a day in our old home town with some of my children. For the Daily Inkling’s prompt from yesterday. I waited until today so I would have something to write about.
Train slides from one world to another, from silence of bird-bicker to tumult of traffic, from bright, sharp flicker of wings to the greasy take-away throb of wheels, and the vague froth of faces fixed on their own private thoughts. Once I found this incessant motion reassuring, the casual brushing past complete strangers, the incongruities of the architecture, the ugly splashed with specks of beauty.
Now it grates, wearies and I rest on the broad, strong wings of my not-quite-flown nestlings, to bear me high beyond the fumes and clatter, where memories of childhood laughter still linger.
Blue sky a lone bird
ploughs over fields sun-sparkled—
train winds homewards

Thank you for reblogging, Frank 🙂
😇
I hope despite the weariness and fumes, you enjoyed your trip to see your “nestlings.”
I was thinking about you–but behind on reading everything.
It wasn’t nearly long enough and two of them were working so I didn’t get to see them. There isn’t a time when they are all free at the same time. It’s good to know that three of them are living together quite peacefully. They have turned out such good, thoughtful people.
Oh–I didn’t realize that three were living together. That’s great–though sorry you didn’t get to see all of them. It sounds like both your young ones and mine have turned out well. 🙂
Two of them got a small apartment together, then when their brother moved out of his shared apartment, he took up residence on their couch. That was months ago and I was expecting them to have strangled him long ago, but they seem to all get along fine. Yes, it’s a relief, isn’t it? Makes you think you must have done something right 🙂
It does seem like close quarters, but perhaps having different schedules helps. 🙂
Yeah, like finishing work at two in the morning and preparing a meal when he gets in…
🙂
Beautiful musings.
How I love trains…
Thanks. Me too.
