Robin sits on the empty feeder with feathers ruffled by the wind and cold combing through the fluffy down next to its skin.
The feeder is empty like the countryside, fallen quiet because they have all gone away, leaving only snow behind them.
Robin peers through the falling flakes, smells only winter in the wind and knows, somehow, in the cold creeping ever closer to the warm core of its tiny body, that this winter will never end.
Aww sniff sniff – poor wee thing.
I don’t know how they survive at all. I really don’t.
down!
beautiful and amazing that they make it though the winters
They’re tougher than I would be!
Poor Robin (and you). Sad, but lyrical. I hope it warms up for you soon. It’s 5 F here (with negative number windchill), but Monday it’s supposed to get to mid 50s. Crazy!
It isn’t cold outside (52°F) but it’s only 50°F indoors except for the study where we have a sizzling 64°F! The fridge has stopped working again 😦 too cold for fridges in this house. Roll on spring. Please!!!
Well, I guess it’s cold enough to keep things cool, just not frozen. 🙂 I hope spring does come soon–but I know it will be a months still for us, though we might luck out with bits of it.
It takes a long time for the freezer part to defrost and so far it hasn’t. What luck!
🙂
I’ve always wondered how birds manage to survive severe winter weather. This winter seems somehow particularly ominous. (K)
Many of them don’t. It’s one way species decline, fewer resisting the winter cold, fewer nests, fewer eggs, weaker chicks, and so on. Only takes a few years for there to be none left.
Aww, poor thing. I feel for all the birds in winter 😦

Me too. Who’d be a tiny songbird?
