between storms
the meadow blooms
unperturbed
impassive deer browse
while thunder rocks the sky
until I appear
thistledown races
on the wind’s back—heralds
of the next storm

I love your observations and the way you’ve woven these words… was just writing this when my peace was suddenly shattered by a huge military plane that flew in low over our sleepy village – made me leap up in alarm. I’ve settled down again now!
Thank you 🙂
Oh, we get that too! There’s a military base 100kms away as the crow flies and when they fly over (why?) they set the dog off barking. We tend not to imagine NZ with a military but who doesn’t have a standing army?
Sometimes there are joint military exercises here with Australia – NZ has a very challenging geography which must be perfect for the purpose. Nigel had seen something recently about low-flying exercises. NZ has heavily reduced its airforce capability but has military and in particular very well regarded SAS troops.
I’d be all for reducing capacity and for reducing arms production. If it’s just to sell to the Saudis, where’s the ethics in that?
I’m with you on that Jane.
🙂
Literally the calm before the storm
Exactly 🙂
I always like between states, especially snow storms. There’s a special quiet.
I think the terror of it starting again would kill me. Snow is not my friend.
Simply effective.
Cheers 🙂
The weather is always changing. I like the observation that the deer is scared of humans but not thunder. And for good reason! (K)
It’s sad but they’re right to take no chances.
Absolutely right.
Hope only in nature will be storms in future. 😉 Michael
It’s a nice thought 🙂
