windstorm gogyohka

For Frank Tassone’s haikai challenge.

we burn and blight

and the balance tips to death

blown by fiery winds

we count the loss and the bodies piled—

tomorrow the hunting season starts

I used to do lots of things I didn't much enjoy. Now I am officially a writer. It's what I always wanted to be.

    1. Maybe their government should start making the billionaires who live in a tax paradise and have their businesses registered there start paying some taxes for the privilege, since I don’t see them queuing up to donate to a disaster fund voluntarily.

      1. I never what to do for the best. They say to go around making a lot of noise and throw dog biscuits around to distract the dogs, but I think I’d rather the animals came here where it’s safe.

      2. There’s nowhere. The habitat is so reduced now that large mammals have trouble finding anywhere to hide round here. It’s very rural (so lots of gun nuts) and far less wooded than the rest of Aquitaine—good farm land in the plain of the Garonne.

      3. As I said, we won’t share. The idea that the animals have the right to shelter, to water, to food is one that most people won’t accept. We take first, biggest share. If there’s any water in the stream left when we’ve washed the car and watered the canna lilies maybe the thirsty animals can have some.
