For Colleen’s weekly challenge. A butterfly cinquain.
swallows
flock, twittering
companionably in
their fighter plane swoop and roll, fierce
hunters,
gathering their strength. I watch them
dance, enthralled, knowing I
would never dare
follow.
The swoop of the words is just right–and great illustration (K)
It is a lovely image. They are splendid little birds. I can never get over how they fly across huge expanses of water without being able to settle, rest, or eat. They are so tiny, you’d think they would use up all their energy reserves long before landfall. Then they cross the Sahara Desert….
The shape is perfect for this. So redolent of this time of year.
Thank you. It’s probably about thirty years since I saw so many swallows. I’d forgotten what a flock of them looked like.
You found a wonderful image for the great poem. 😉
Swallows are naturals 🙂
Yes, they are. I love them too, but after our farmers built new stables, they were never seen here.
Habitat gone. It’s the same everywhere.
Agreeing with all of the above–love the swooping words and the image.
We both might fly with them in our dreams. 🙂
In our dreams maybe. I know I’d never have their courage to take on such a journey 🙂
I am not an adventurer–and I get motion sickness, so. . .;)
Me too on both counts 🙂
Didn’t Damien once think we were the same person? 😉
Ha ha! Maybe. My initials are MJ 🙂
🙂
Beautiful! I’m in awe of your way with words and how you’ve woven them.
Thank you! It’s like translation, putting an image into words 🙂
Lovely Jane..
Thank you, Sally 🙂
I love to watch swallows💜
We used to get masses of swifts in town, but here it’s swallows. Years (decades) since I’ve seen so many.
They are beautiful birds 💜
And they migrate so far!
They are amazing 💜
True 🙂
Fabulous Butterfly Cinquain, Jane. Swallows are truly the “fighter pilots” of the sky. Their maneuvers always astound me. I’ve seen quite a few cactus wrens here in AZ – a bird I’m not well acquainted with. Lovely creatures and they flit about on the ground chasing bugs. ❤
Thanks Colleen! They are winged hunters. Bugs beware 🙂
I’m still identifying the new birds here. We have a similar bug hunter also. They are so fun to watch. ❤
Watching birds is tremendous. I used to be keen when I was a kid. I see so many more varieties here than I did where I grew up, but also many species that have dropped off the radar.
I know what you mean. Arizona is rich in nature. Right now, I’m enjoying the hummingbirds. Brilliant colors!
Lucky you!
Tiny little buggers! I can’t snap a photo! 🥰
I think you need a fancy camera to capture humming birds 🙂
Most definitely! 😍
