Garona

I should have taken some photos…

Wild is the wide sky streamered in pale cloud

roaring with the wind’s voice,

slow and silent the river

running to the wild wide sea

and the egrets wading in the shallows.

Blue and green sinuosity this October water

dark mirror of the bottomless sky

broidered with celandine and bright weed

textured with rocky shoals and tree carcases.

No bridge of golden stone

precious-arched and metrically scanned,

bowing in its evenly paced minuet

to the city at either hand,

can compare in pure beauty

with such luscious liquid life.

I used to do lots of things I didn't much enjoy. Now I am officially a writer. It's what I always wanted to be.

    1. I wish I’d taken some photos of the reserve from the footbridge over the river. It’s beauitiful. The river is low at the moment with reefs and sandbanks, but the water is shaded by trees and the surface is covered in water plants, especially celandines and king cups. There are egrets and herons everywhere. Right in the middle of the city. Small city, okay but the regional capital.

  1. I love your description of the water:

textured with rocky shoals and tree carcases.

You have definitely captured the river in a mosaic of words. Absolutely beautiful.
