About a cat

A cat Serpent’s Tail poem for the OctPoWriMo prompt.

Come on Trixie

What can I say about the cat

that shares this home,

roams at will

until hunger brings her in?

Winter cold resistant,

insistent, she claims her right to walk,

stalk the night,

bright eyes light the way.

Daytime, she sits for hours,

scours thickets and hedge,

edging ever closer to small prey.

Says the dog, you’ll never change her,

feather-brain but quick,

thick as river mud but fast,

last to leave the chase.

Brace yourself to wait,

late, for there she’ll squat.

I used to do lots of things I didn't much enjoy. Now I am officially a writer. It's what I always wanted to be.

  1. There are certain animals that insist on doing things on their own terms. I had a cat like that for a while.

    1. We have a dog that is very people shy and won’t go for walks in daylight in case we meet someone. So we walk him just before bedtime. We have to lock Trixie indoors because she follows us, at her own cat speed, screaming like a banshee (she has a rich vocabulary), and the walk takes forever.

  2. I never met a cat with as much personality as your Trixie. I’m imagining she inspires stories as well as this lovely poem. Insolent??? Screams like a banshee???? Nice.

    1. Our first cat was a Siamese and he talked a lot, but Trixie has a much wider vocabulary and she uses it. We have conversations with her. I’m not certain she grasps the sense but she certainly understands the principle!

  3. Trixie does sound like a queen.
All of our cats talk to us. I think it’s because we talk back. 🙂
Our white cat, Mickey, had dental surgery (cleaning and two teeth pulled) on Wednesday, but thankfully, it all went well, and he doesn’t seem to be in any pain.

Obviously said via (the dog) someone who knows ❤️ Poem brought my 1st smile of the morning to me, on tiny cat paws 😊
