Rain beats the rhythm

Rain beats the rhythm

of the rattle of the shutters

and the low moan of the wind

in the branches bare,

where the huddled songbirds chirrup

feathers ruffled by the cold,

their plaintive voices joining

in the keening for the summer

dead and golden autumn dying—

the monochrome refrain

of chill winter’s song.
