Tanka Tuesday: Calm & Present

For Colleen’s tanka Tuesday challenge. A(nother) butterfly cinquain.

When will

we have some peace,

asks the earth, in these fields,

these woods, dappled lakes and rushing

rivers?

Will the guns ever fall silent,

or will we live this now

of cold killing

always?

I used to do lots of things I didn't much enjoy. Now I am officially a writer. It's what I always wanted to be.

  1. Powerful statement poetry and one can only wish that our elected officials read poetry… but alas, they are too consumed with warmongering! You and I’ve had this discussion, I know… but your words always move me. ❤

  2. How about a conspiracy to outlaw bullets, surreptitiously? Then the rifles could only be used as clubs, hopefully by the shooters on each other.

The phrase “dappled lakes” is especially evocative, making one long to be there.

    1. Thank you.

I don’t know what the solution is except to ban hunting altogether. Knowing what we do about the dramatic decline of wildlife, ethically we don’t have the right to kill anything.

    1. Nope they never left. From September to February they are allowed to shoot more or less anything and everything, despite public opinion turning against it. Guns have votes. Too many retired men with too much time on their hands and not a single idea in their heads.
