Tidings

AugustStorm4

storm again the grey

so familiar a cover

to the rain-lashed world

and the dimming

of the light

before the night

no dusk

of soft golden

fading

drumroll and lights

yet we pull the shutters closed

on the spectacle

no moon rides

no stars glow beneath the waves

of such heavy seas

I used to do lots of things I didn't much enjoy. Now I am officially a writer. It's what I always wanted to be.

  1. This is a grand description of a storm coming on at the end of day. No gradual (enjoyable) sunset. If there’s light, it will come from lightning. Since it’s “so familiar a cover,” then I hope the storm chooses to stay away, go somewhere else for a while. We’ve been having dramatic appearances of storms, quickly disappearing so there’s sun and stillness for a little while, then the storm returns in a big way again. It’s been a pattern of quick transitions between tempest and sunshine.

    1. Thank you. It’s been a turbulent time altogether for us, social, personal as well as meteorological. I hope the social upheavals will result in something positive for society and not create more gulfs, and the storms will end up getting bored and go somewhere else. On the personal side, there’s grieving that might settle into a dull ache, but I worry it won’t ever go away. Not for me, for my godmother who lost her husband two weeks ago.

  2. Beautiful description of a storm (both the meteorological and the social/emotional sort)–we have to close the shutters, but sometimes there’s that lovely after rain scent and glow afterwards. The sky does look so interesting and beautiful before a storm. πŸ˜€

      1. We had a “regular” thunderstorm the other day–just some thunder in the distance and a brief heavy rain. I was inside, and everything was fine–no crazy winds, no tornado alerts. πŸ˜€
