They dance in the waterworld, they told her, all day, and at night there is diamond light to transfigure the dance, even yours.

She looked at her skeletal limbs, black as dead wood, and the marks of the tomb so close, and she knew she had nothing to lose, it had already gone

They nodded from all the blank staring windows as she stepped into the spray, and in the morning there was one more foaming fountain beneath the dark-faced block.

I used to do lots of things I didn't much enjoy. Now I am officially a writer. It's what I always wanted to be.

  1. Jane, I don’t know why, but all the pictures of atrocity committed by mankind flashed into my mind, especially against the most innocent and helpless, as embodied by this young girl. I think what is most vile is the implied hidden deceit it what “they told her” – a deceit of evil incarnate. This sent chills up my spine, but you probably already guessed that.

    1. I’m so pleased you read all that it into what I implied, but didn’t say. It’s exactly what I intended. Without falling into conspiracy theory territory, there is an awfully ugly underbelly to all our societies, and all the powerful and many of the not-so powerful are complicit.

      1. Stunning artistry of words, Jane, that three lines packed such a punch. I agree, many of us are complicit by staying silent or on the sidelines — at least until “they” come for us.

  2. Its a spooky image. We are told from a young age that “they” know better. And to keep quiet and look the other way lest we be selected next. (K)
