Cold of daybreak
and we suck in our breath
gasp at the sudden burning in the throat
lungs filling with fire.
White as the ashes of hell
the silent earth waits
painted scenery
of an apocalyptic play;
air glitters vibrates
with small birdwings
and a glimmer of hope runs
through the veins of the morning
like quicksilver.
Beautiful–that’s a bit how it was here early this morning. I think the cold here was glittery, rather than ashes of hell.
It was really cold last night. I kept waking with my nose and face frozen.
And the water pipes were frozen in the morning. No water…. Husband has been outside trying to warm up the bit of pipe that the plumber was supposed to mend and cover over but never did. He’s got the water running again (it’s 5.20pm here and the sun’s going) but we’ll have to see if there are leaks. It’s going to be cold again tonight.
Oh dear. Frozen water pipes are not fun. I hope it’s all sorted out.
We’ve wrapped the exposed pipe up nice and warm and we’re going to leave a tap dripping all night to keep the water moving. Please cross fingers that the frost isn’t too bad tonight!
I will! Good luck!
🙂
Nicely written
Thank you. I’m feeling it.
You’re always welcome Jane
🙂
I can feel the cold in your writing and in your descriptions here, Jane. I do hope you have some hot water tonight!
We got the pipe unfrozen and we’re going to leave a tap open to keep the water moving tonight. The hardest part is going to be finding a plumber willing to finish the job the other one started and mend the pipe so we can shovel it back underground again.
😳 it doesn’t sound like much fun at such a cold time. I hope at least your heating is working!
We don’t have ‘heating’. We have a wood stove in the study and one in the kitchen. They get those two rooms up to 14-16°C if we keep them stoked up all day. The rest of the house is f*cking freezing!
I love your poetry ❤
I appreciate you saying so 🙂
You’re very welcome indeed ❤🌷

I know that ice in the lungs. It really does take the breath away. But once again the landscape shimmers with light. (K)
We’re coming out of that cold snap. Crossing fingers it doesn’t freeze again. The pipes won’t take a second battering.
I know all about frozen pipes (but not recently, thank goodness). So I hope it stays warm for you.
Warm, I wouldn’t say, but the water is running and hot again.
