For the dverse prompt.

Is this the way?

So many waving arms and shouting faces,
so many truths where one would be enough.

I walk the hard path, slip-shod, where eagles fly,
see the painted sky, the running deer,
the tawdry remnants fit only for a magpie’s nest.

I used to do lots of things I didn't much enjoy. Now I am officially a writer. It's what I always wanted to be.

  1. … many truths….the story of the last four years…probably more. I think our truths are flavored by perception and choice of what is put before our eyes. My 44 year old son was talking with me a few days ago….and he said something like….everyone thought there was more or less one truth when “you” (meaning me) were growing up: your parents, and Walter Cronkite! There’s some truth to that! 🙂

    1. Maybe. I was thinking of the basic truths about what we ought to be doing to stop the death of the planet. The evidence is always there, even if we have to sift through the lies to find it.

  2. I’d like to think of the magpie collecting the tawdry remnants of truths overlooked by all those people waving arms and shouting. I must check the magpie’s nest in our garden.

  3. What is this “Truth” thing of which you speak? It has been almost invisible (totally absent? for so long now… Fine work, JD. My thumb is up.

  4. I look to nature for the truth. Just like city pollution occludes the stars, there is so much garbage that occludes it. I like the “tawdry remnants fit only for a magpie’s nest.”

  5. “So many truths when one would do” …. but we can’t find one amidst all the faux truths, that’s the problem! But the magpies like them…….

    1. There’s a lot of posturing in the assertions of some people, denying that they have any impact on the misery in the world. It’s comforting to them, but it’s also completely selfish.

    1. It doesn’t even have to be threatening, simply self-righteous and self-justifying. We all think we have the answer to other people’s problems but it rarely involves doing without our own little comforts and privileges.

    1. Maybe truth isn’t the right word. I think on a humanitarian, understanding and generous scale, there is a right way to go. We often choose to ignore it though, pretend we’re not well enough informed, but I think deep down we know.

  6. So many obstacles standing in the way, on the path to the truth, the one truth. It takes effort and sometime courage to find it. Loved your poem!

    1. Thank you! There is always a right way and it’s usually not the easy way. I think most of us know what we ought to do, but it’s easier to go with the flow…in the wrong direction.

  7. Truth stands forever. In the process of time, many had had to walk the eagles path to grasp it

    Thanks for a lovely poem.

    1. Thanks 🙂 You mean the single and double spacing? If you just copy and paste from Word into WordPress it double spaces. To get a single space as the lines appear in your text, instead of just using command + v you use shift + command + v.
