Footprints

For yesterday’s 30DaysWild prompt. Late.

Footprints

We tread this earth
too heavy
with careless steps
denying our feet of clay.

And in our wake
we leave a trail
of broken stalks
petals crushed and bleeding

a trail of used discarded things
carcases of unnecessary whims

a trail of microscopic death
pathogens carcinogens

a blackberry trail
sweet and dark
though who sees more
than briar thorns?

I used to do lots of things I didn't much enjoy. Now I am officially a writer. It's what I always wanted to be.

  1. So careless. I loved crossing the railroad tracks to pick blackberries as a child though I’m sure I paid no attention to what was under my feet. I left no garbage at least… (k)

    1. I’m sure you didn’t. When we were children, we would never have been in a position to leave waste. It’s only reasonably recently that people have grazed all their waking hours and walk around with stuff that will end up dropped in the road behind them.
