A poem for dverse before I fall asleep.
Where I would be
Above a blue sea, glitter-struck
and pine-scented, heat trilling with cicada wings,
thyme and history trod beneath our feet,
or above a green sea, among endless hills
of unreal green and purple at sunset,
always the tang of rain in the wind,
in a city street, cafés, indifference
of passers-by and monuments,
roofs slate-grey as pigeons,
or here, in this stove-ticking, dog-dreaming
silence, windows shuttered against rain
and wind, spring flowers-in-waiting.
Here or there, then as now, the place
is in the heart, the hand, the warmth
of sleeping breath, wherever you are.
Love the word pairing specially spring flowers-in-waiting. Most of all, that last stanza hits home.
I’m pleased you like it, Grace.
❤
Yes, being happy wherever your are! Well done!
Thank you 🙂
“dog-dreaming silence”–the best place is always with those you love. (K)
It is. They become part of the place, wherever it is.
Reminded me of that beautiful Beatles song 🎶 Here, There and Everywhere 🎶 Thanks for sharing, Jane 😊
I’m pleased you enjoyed the poem 🙂
They do.
I especially like the final two stanzas–“dog-dreaming silence.”
Beauty and contentment found in the heart.
Thank you 🙂
Yes, it’s contentment and peace rather than happiness. I’m not sure that’s on the cards for us, not knowing all that we do.
🙂
That last stanza sums up so beautifully the spaces that matter. 🙂
Thanks Punam. It’s a cliché, I know, but you can have all the material wealth possible and if you don’t care about the people you’re sharing it with, your life is really very empty.
Some clichés are irreplaceable. You are welcome. 🙂
Beautiful, and very poignant Jane. I celebrate your truth my friend.
Thanks Rob. It might not be everybody’s truth. An awful lot of people think they can replace love and affection with possessions, but I think they’re wrong.
Finding peace with the here and now can make any place seem special – I agree!
Indeed… it’s not where but with whom that is the real place.
Your poem lulled me into a state of contentment, of grace. Thank you.
I’m pleased you enjoyed it, Helen 🙂
This poem is to die for!! Gorgeous, gorgeous work done 😍😍😍
Thank you! I’m pleased it pleased 🙂
