Quatern: When snowdrops pierce

When snowdrops pierce the frost-hard earth,

And winter mists shroud the water,

Robin sings to conjure the sun,

By the lake the moon’s pale daughter.

Hoar frost glitters upon the branch,

When snowdrops pierce the frost-hard earth,

Where fieldmice curl with worm and seed,

Spring waits to bring the world to birth.

Though all is stark and winter bare,

Sunlight promises warmth to come,

When snowdrops pierce the frost-hard earth,

With cracking ice and deep earth’s thrum.

You said you’d come at winter’s end,

When cold sorrow gives way to mirth,

Come you back, I’ll still be waiting,

When snowdrops pierce the frost-hard earth.
