Meat

We have made this world cold
pitiless and cruel.

The dark called up or down
or dragged from the abyss
wraps wet winged arms about us
cradling some in their desired blindness

while the hallowed beam that glows
shows to those with open eyes
only our hypocrisy

and the killing fields
beneath bone-light.

I used to do lots of things I didn't much enjoy. Now I am officially a writer. It's what I always wanted to be.

      1. If it’s left to the punters, they’ll pretend they don’t know where their meat comes from. It needs legislation to close down factory farms. So, meat gets expensive? So are truffles and wild salmon.

  1. This is powerful Jane — and I agree. As a vegetarian (and failed vegan) since around 1988, you have encapsulated it all for me. Our treatment of each other — and our co-habitants the animals, in what should be a world of beauty — is an outright abomination. I think I shall have to write a poem on this subject too. I have reblogged your. Thank you.

    1. Thank you, Francis. There was yet another report in the news today about the abominable conditions in pig factory farms. It’s too much. I feel like crying. I can’t eat meat, it is all just too cruel. We are monsters and most of us pretend it’s ‘natural’. Thanks for feeling the same way ๐Ÿ™‚
