Star dancing

Merril’s prosery prompt for dverse included the line: Against the blue cloth of the sky.
I haven’t written a prosery, but I’ve borrowed the line to use in a mirrored refrain poem.

Star dancing

These slothful summer evenings slide
Into the night where they belong,
Against the blue cloth of the sky,
While stars dance slows the whole night long.

The circles, cycles shorten as
The days; the months, the years fly by,
While stars dance slows the whole night long,
Against the blue cloth of the sky.

We hear the raven, hear the owl,
The riverโ€™s roar, the blackbirdโ€™s song,
Against the blue cloth of the sky,
While stars dance slows the whole night long.

The rising moonโ€™s a disco ball;
I take your hand, the poplars sigh,
While stars dance slows the whole night long,
Against the blue cloth of the sky.

I used to do lots of things I didn't much enjoy. Now I am officially a writer. It's what I always wanted to be.

  1. This is beautiful, Jane. I love your refrain.
It’s weird, but I had Irish pipes playing in the background of my mind movie (while reading–you understand), and even though you wrote river, I saw a beach and sea.
