A very short one for the dverse prompt.
Ripeness
The vendange is over,
the first pressing of grape juice,
(since we can’t have water this dry year)
fermenting now in cask, in vat,
on the vine for the birds to steal,
punch-drunk in this October sun.
I love “punch-drunk in this October sun”!
They’re picking at the leavings, poor things, but there are elderberries too and they love those 🙂
Ah! At least they have those. 🙂
They seem to prefer them anyway 🙂
Nice that someone is enjoying them. About the water, is there rationing going on there or do you mean lack of rain?
We didn’t have rationing though they did in some areas. No large centres of population and no intensive agriculture. Just no rain. Still.
😦
This was so comfortably engaging Jane. Living in this wine region of eastern Lake Washington, I have personally encountered the essence your piece here — wonderful my friend. 🙂✌🏼❤️
Very nice! short and sweet!
Beautifully fermented, Jane. I love the image of birds stealing grapes, punch-drunk in October sun!
Thank you. The sun is a bonus!
A delicious substitute. (K)
The birds seem very particular about what they’ll eat. I read that dogwood berries were great favourites with most species, but they won’t touch them at all in these parts.
I have heard of birds getting drunk on fermenting berries. Here it would be rowan berries though
I wish we had rowan trees.
The local vineyards here in Sussex think it’ll be one of the best ever years for white wine because of the hot summer. Apparently the lack of rain enhances the sugars also.
They were talking about it here. Some of the champagne houses are thinking of buying English vineyards. Even in the Champagne region it was too hot this year to make very good wine.
