A quadrille (44 words) for the dVerse challenge.
Winter whispers in the sedge
at river’s edge
where cold mist lies
and robin flies.
Frost clings white
to winter night
and breaks the dawn
in sun’s rays shorn
of all their gold.
In colours bold,
when wild geese cry,
spring, paint the sky!
There’s nothing like wild geese early on a cold morning. You build the scene well
Thank you! It’s the first sign that spring’s really here. Can’t wait!
Nice use of meter and rhyme. I also liked the ending about painting the sky.
Thank you Frank. Adding a rhyme adds to the challenge and I like the effect 🙂
“spring, paint the sky!” is such a lovely call, a beautiful invitation.
It’s not easy to rhyme in a Quadrille, and you’ve done so here so beautifully.
Thank you! I’m glad you like this. I’m fond of rhymes and use them often.
Lovely, Jane. I like the rhyme and also the rhythm, like the tides.
Although it’s actually fairly mild here right now, I’m sure we’ll get a winter blast again before long. I’m ready for spring, too.
Thank you! I’m glad you like it.
It seems a bit much to hope that this is all the winter we’re going to get, but I am 🙂
🙂
“In sun rays shorn of all their gold’ THAT was marvelous!
A rhyme that just seemed made in heaven:)
That’s a great call to arms…hopefully spring is listening. (K)
I sincerely hope spring won’t mess about this year.
Love the nature here and how you managed with rhymes
Thank you! I like rhymes 🙂
I like the rhyming pattern in this piece. Well done.
Thank you 🙂 I enjoy rhymes and it makes the quadrille more of a challenge.
It’s not easy to bring in rhyme, especially when your lines are so short, without sounding like a nursery-song, but you achieve a subtle and charming effect. And I see you are based in France? I was living there until 5 months ago and miss it so…
Thank you, Marina! Whereabouts were you living? And where have you gone?
I was living in Rhone-Alpes, just outside Geneva, and have now moved back to the UK. I miss the mountains, especially in winter, and I went to Bordeaux last summer and loved it.
I can imagine living among mountains must be hard to get over. Bordeaux is an attractive city but it’s become so popular they’re building up and out and over everything. Lots of the quirky abandoned places are being gentrified. I miss the mess.
A rhyming quadrille! Very impressive 🙂
It wasn’t as difficult as I expected since there’s no line length or rhythm to respect.
Lovely rhyming.
Thanks again 🙂
