In the morning quiet
of thrushes singing and the cooing of turtle doves
three deer
father and twin sons
bound across the meadow
framed by the window
leaping russet
against golden green.
I can almost feel the blood coursing
beneath that sleek hide and muscled grace.

Thank you! Yes, it was a rare treat! I hope they’ve gone to meet mother.
Oh, wonderful! I wish I could have been there with you!
It’s months since they’ve come so close to the house, just outside the window. They are very likely the males that have demolished a couple of saplings, rubbing the velvet off their antlers. I wish I could have photographed them, but if I’d got close to the window they’d have bolted.
Well, you described it, so we got to share it anyway.
I thought if you when I saw the father turn into profile showing off his antlers, waiting for the twins. You’d have loved them ๐
I would have! I’m glad you got to see them for both of us. ๐
I’d like you to see the pheasants too. They come around every day now, a cock pheasant and two hens. Often he stands in the middle of meadow calling his harem. Can take a long time. The girls like their freedom ๐
I like that they keep him waiting. Hahaha.
They do! For hours! It’s good that he comes up close to the house, because everywhere is so quiet and we’re not exactly hell-raisers. They do use the lane though, and although I only saw one car go past today, they’ve got into a dangerous habit.
Now I’m imagining them come a-calling, walking down the lane. ๐
The hen birds are funny. They’re like wind up toys. While the cock struts along the lane a little way then turns back into the field, the hen birds accelerate and go zooming off out of sight like the Roadrunner. Idiotic creatures! Then he waits for hours yelling until they find their way back ๐

leaping russet against golden green…wonderful! (K)
They’re beautiful. The distance they can cover in a few leaps is incredible. So fast!
You’ve said it, “muscled grace.” Such strength and beauty in the deer.
There is. They look so healthy and powerful.
Beautiful ๐
Thank you, Willow ๐
