Morning deer

In the morning quiet

of thrushes singing and the cooing of turtle doves

three deer

father and twin sons

bound across the meadow

framed by the window

leaping russet

against golden green.

I can almost feel the blood coursing

beneath that sleek hide and muscled grace.

I used to do lots of things I didn't much enjoy. Now I am officially a writer. It's what I always wanted to be.

    1. It’s months since they’ve come so close to the house, just outside the window. They are very likely the males that have demolished a couple of saplings, rubbing the velvet off their antlers. I wish I could have photographed them, but if I’d got close to the window they’d have bolted.

      1. I’d like you to see the pheasants too. They come around every day now, a cock pheasant and two hens. Often he stands in the middle of meadow calling his harem. Can take a long time. The girls like their freedom ๐Ÿ™‚

      2. They do! For hours! It’s good that he comes up close to the house, because everywhere is so quiet and we’re not exactly hell-raisers. They do use the lane though, and although I only saw one car go past today, they’ve got into a dangerous habit.

      3. The hen birds are funny. They’re like wind up toys. While the cock struts along the lane a little way then turns back into the field, the hen birds accelerate and go zooming off out of sight like the Roadrunner. Idiotic creatures! Then he waits for hours yelling until they find their way back ๐Ÿ™‚
